Entrenched, Unrelenting, Unsettled: Cultural Essentialism in International Development Research on Domestic Violence in Nepal

Domestic violence (DV) is a serious issue that supports systems of oppression. Research and development work often describe DV in ways that stereotype cultures, portraying some as “traditional” and others as “modern.” This study analyzed 26 reports on DV in Nepal and found that many reports reinforced stereotypes by linking violence to culture and tradition, though some challenged these ideas. The authors recommend avoiding cultural stereotypes, involving local leaders in research, learning from community strategies, and studying how global changes affect social problems.
